Welcome to Amity Farm. We
really dig hostas.
Actually, we are pretty much crazy about them. Anything that enjoys hanging out in the shade as much as we do is all right by us. Hosta plants are just about the most hardy, most reliable, and most forgiving shade perennial around. They grow quickly and thickly, leaving no room for weeds in between. The best news of all is that most every hosta is generally content to live on the dry side if there is enough shade. That means they can be planted under that maple tree between all those roots, and still get enough to drink. What’s not to love?
Happily, hostas – and all the other plants we offer – transplant well all season long. Ours are field grown (well, forest grown) in good glacial till on our 11-acre wooded property, which makes for strong roots and a good transition to your shady spot. Just because they are good at spreading their toes under our trees doesn’t mean they aren’t excited about growing in other folk’s gardens; I hear them chattering about that daily. We will dig up your selections and send them home with you, only shedding an occasional tear. Our farm kitties, Chassis and Diesel, will wander through the woods with you. Chamois (the shy one) may even join them if we can get her to step outside.
For 2010, Amity Farm is adding quite a few hostas and other perennial plants that we are very excited to offer. Among the new kids are two more Heucheras (“Coral Bells”) with beautiful foliage, and flowers that draw hummingbirds like a magnet. Take a look at our list of varieties and see what plants you MUST HAVE for your gardens; we are happy to share them all!
Shade-tolerant plants don’t have to be boring. Come see our hosta farm for yourself!
BIG NEWS! We will be open NOW FIVE DAYS A WEEK! New hours on Wednesdays through Saturdays are 10 am – 5 pm, and Sundays are still 1 pm - 4 pm. That means we’ll be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays... We are just a 30-minute drive from Columbus, Ohio, near the tiny village of Alexandria, on highway 37 (which IS Johnstown-Alexandria Road) between Johnstown and Granville, Ohio.
